What is an Industry Standard Fastener?

Fastener standards encompass a wide range of elements, including dimensions (with separate standards for inch and metric fasteners), mechanical properties, classifications, materials, and usage. For instance, ASTM categorizes their standards into six distinct groups, providing a comprehensive understanding of the various fastener characteristics that are often standardized by other organizations.

These categories include:
Specifications: Detail the physical characteristics such as dimensions and tolerances, as well as chemical properties like material composition.
Test Methods: Outline how to test specific properties, such as machinability, and the desired outcomes of those tests.
Practice: Provide procedural instructions for the proper use of fasteners.
Guide: Offer advice and considerations for selecting the appropriate fastener.
Classification: Present information about the fastener without prescribing specific actions.
Terminology: Include definitions, symbols, and other identifying factors related to fasteners.
